Calendar of Activities and Events in the Life of our Community of Faith:

Meet our pastor…

Wilma “Willie” Louise Eliassen was born on December 3, 1947, to Christina and Victor Henry Eliassen, who were serving as Presbyterian missionaries at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, North Carolina. She and her husband, Jerry, have been married for 32 years, and they have one son, Evan, who is 28.  Our pastor enjoys shape-note singing, and playing the trombone and recorders. Other pastimes include hiking and gardening, and she is particularly interested in history and archaeology.

Willie was graduated from UNC-Asheville in 1971 with a degree in art and again in 1987 with a major in early childhood education.  She taught in the Asheville City School system and worked as an activities coordinator for Highland Farms Retirement Community in Black Mountain, NC.

Although Willie grew up in the Presbyterian Church, she abandoned the church in her early adult years and lived for nearly three decades in denial of her relationship with God.  For several years prior to her return to the church, Willie became deeply involved in the shape-note singing community of Western North Carolina. Through this experience, she found the sense of community and unconditional love that had been missing from the church of her youth.  Through this awareness of community, God led Willie to seek a church home, which she found at Morning Star Moravian Church in Asheville.  She attended worship services at Morning Star in the fall of 1995 and joined the congregation on February 18, 1996.

As Willie grew in her faith, she became aware of God’s call to a deeper level of service.  After a year of prayer and discernment, she realized that her call was to ordained ministry.  This led Willie to put aside her career and her leadership role in the shape-note singing community and travel to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, where she was graduated from Moravian Theological Seminary on May 15, 2004.  While at the seminary, Willie earned the Hebrew Language Award in 2003, and the Faculty Award for

Academic Achievement in 2004.

Willie’s husband, Jerry, has been a major source of support and affirmation for her call process, as have been the congregation of Morning Star Church and the Provincial Elders’ Conference of the Moravian Church Southern Province.

Willie became our pastor on Sunday, June 27, 2004.

SPIRITUAL LIFE

ADULT BIBLE STUDY & CHILDREN’S CHURCH SCHEDULE:

God can use many practices of faith to bless us; enrich us; help us to "grow in faith, love, and hope"; and bring us to the fullness of life Christ intends for all his disciples. Opportunities for fellowship, worship and celebration, and learning about God's Word are available through our adult Bible study classes and Children’s Church. Got questions about the classes? Come at 9:00 Sunday mornings for coffee in the kitchen or call Pastor Willie during the week.

9:15a.m. -10:00a.m. Sunday mornings.  The “Present Word” adult class meets with Charles Benson in the church library.

10:50a.m. - 11:30a.m Sunday mornings.  Special “Children’s Church” services are conducted in Fellowship Hall for small children up to middle school age.  These are hands on, experiential services geared for the young people.  Our kids love these programs!

6:45p.m. Wednesday evenings.  Our mid-week communion and prayer service is available for those who can’t attend church on Sunday morning and all those who would like to worship together more than once a week.  It’s an informal service of song, prayer, scripture, liturgical worship, and communion.

10:00a.m. Thursday mornings.  The “Morning Light” adult Bible study Class meets with Pastor Willie.

7:00p.m. Tuesday evenings.  The “New Life” adult class meets for Bible study with John and Cassie Small in a home of one of the group members each week.  Currently, the group is studying Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount.

MISSION

Annual Mission Projects:

The second Sunday of every month is “Sharing Sunday,” where members of our congregation bring to our worship service donations of packaged food for the Christian Sharing Center. You can be a part of this outreach program by picking up a paper sack with a list of needed supplies on the first Sunday of each month and returning it with your donations on “Sharing Sundays.”

The Children's Sunday school Class also takes up a collection of loose change from the congregation on “Sharing Sundays.”  Called "Make a Joyful Noise," this collection goes entirely to the Christian Sharing Center.

If you are interested in working at the Christian Sharing Center, speak to one of the volunteers at the church office any weekday morning.  Thanks to Ray and Sharon Davis, Margy Clemmer, Karen Hawkins, Wilhelmina Landis, Cathy Lodding, Lillian Miller for all the time and effort they put into this mission project.

CROP WALK  Twelve members of our congregation participated in the 2005 crop walk and collected $823 to fight hunger.

Operation Christmas Child.  In November, more than forty shoe boxes filled with toys, games, books, and toilet articles were collected for needy children for Christmas.

If you, or your small group, are interested in directing any of our annual mission projects, See Gretchen Sterner or send email to:  newsletter@rhmoravian.org

PRAYERS of INTERCESSION

Together we pray for Willie Israel our pastor and her husband, Jerry.  May her ministry be a blessing to Rolling Hills, and may our congregation be a blessing in the life of Willie and Jerry.

Prayers are encouraged for our President and the other leaders of our nation and the world. We pray that God would give them courage, strength, resolve, and wisdom as they work to re-establish peace in the world.

We also pray for our sons and daughters who are serving in the military, Cassandra Watson, Robert Morgan, and Garret Scott.  Prayers are also requested for friends of our church who are also serving in the military:  Percy Canteenwalla, Ryan Richard, Benjamin Wilde, Patrick Garrity.  May all of these young people serve our country with courage, strength, and honor, and return safely to their homes and families after their tour of duty is over.

To add prayers of intercession, email details to newsletter@rhmoravian.org

In addition to the prayers listed on this website, Rolling Hills has a "Prayer Chain", a group of members of our church who remember intercessory prayer requests in their daily prayers. To add your prayer request to the Prayer Chain, call or leave a message for Helen at the church office, or email details to newsletter@rhmoravian.org
